A de-bulbing machine removes the bulb (bulb residue) from tulips after the flower has been harvested, without damaging the stem or the flower.
This is important because it ensures clean stems without any bulb or root residues that could cause decay or irregularities.
The stem length is preserved, which improves the quality and appearance of the tulips.
It also saves labour, as mechanical de-bulbing is much faster than manual work and reduces damage caused by human error.
In the machine, the tulips are placed on the belt. Guiding cords position the stems neatly under a clamping band. The wheels then crush the bulb and the root is cut off. Residues are removed by special torpedoes, all without damaging the stem.
In short, for professional tulip growers a de-bulbing machine is almost indispensable for maintaining product quality, efficiency and labour costs
